High Neighbor! Residents’ Social Practices in New Danish High-Rises

Historically, Denmark—like the other Nordic countries—has had relatively few, and low residential high-rise buildings compared to urbanized countries. Inspired by an international vertical urban turn, however, multiple high-rises have now been planned built. This has refueled debate on whether living in is compatible with Danish housing culture our high standard of social life. From this local perspective, article wishes contribute emerging scholarship using ethnographic approach life while drawing theories practice concepts home. As part project “Vertical Residential Living: Updated Knowledge Housing Culture Social Life High-Rises” (2020–2021), analyses more than 50 semi-structured interviews residents field observations various spaces eight new Denmark. Reflecting complex links between residents’ homes, practices, shared spaces, presents three findings: First, starts horizontally at front door, outside one’s Second, character taking place floor level pivotal for entering community, architecture, design, interior are important here. Third, indicates that home echoed practices high-rises. Against background, suggests researchers also incorporate a home-centered perspective studying—and planning—vertical neighborhoods.
